Life as a Real Estate Agent: Netflix vs. Reality

Selling Sunset on Netflix. We love it, but it’s seriously messing with would-be real estate agents.

Here’s the thing: Most agents don’t make millions, and certainly not right away. Shows like Selling Sunset make a career in real estate look effortless, part-time, and glamorous. And while we can’t imagine doing anything else, here’s a reality check about life as an agent.

It takes time to make money. Agents make around 2% on every sale. On a $300,000 house, that’s $6,000. Nice, but not millions.

You won’t really be your own boss…at first. New agents work under brokers to learn the ropes before going out on their own. You will be your own boss, but not from day 1.

You will work nights and weekends. Sure, you won’t be clocking in 8-5 pm, but you will need to be available when clients are — and that’s at night and on weekends.

Not all clients will be, shall we say, easy. Tensions *can* skyrocket. And folks deal with those emotions in all sorts of ways. If you’re gonna be in real estate, expect clients who need a double dose of your patience.

We love what we do, but it doesn’t much look like Selling Sunset. That? That just makes for good TV.
